• New Roads Academy is a program to address the academic and behavioral needs of students with severe emotional and behavioral challenges. At New Roads Academy, students work to progress in personal behavior management through a three-level system that addresses their capabilities for respect, responsibility, and safety. In a setting of effective, rigorous, and engaging academic instruction, Newbridge's highly qualified staff supportively acknowledge and reinforce each child's act for positive social behaviors.

• New Roads Academy is designed to focus specifically on research-supported positive behavioral supports and teaching techniques, which include a social-emotional learning curriculum, social skills instruction using 14 core elements, and a points/level system. Other important key components of the program include mental health counseling, close collaboration with families to promote self-awareness and self-control, the development of positive interpersonal/social skills, and positive coping strategies. The staff and Newbridge Learning Academy are committed to providing students with a safe and nurturing learning environment that includes rigorous academic programming enabling students to continue to progress academically. Ultimately, the goal is to help students gain the knowledge and skills needed to successfully transition back to a less restrictive educational setting in their home district.

Where is this located?

• Located in Portable 1, with the Honors Room located in Portable 2

How is it staffed?

• The staff is highly trained and certified to work in this classroom. They attended a two-day training that is followed up with the three observations throughout the year from the program trainers and complete fidelity checks.

What grade level of students are supported?

• Kindergarten - 5th grade

• The Wahluke Transition Learning Center (WTLC) serves students ages 18-21, with an IEP, to become contributing members of society by creating opportunities for self-advocacy skills, academic growth, and a sense of fulfillment necessary for student success, independence, and adulthood.

Staff who supports it

• Betty Aznaran is our teacher who runs the WTLC program. Betty's experience with students with disabilities, along with her community connections make her a perfect fit for the program.

What community partnerships do we have?

• Currently, Wahluke is working with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), ESD 105, Mayor Maggie Celaya, and Wahluke School District to provide students with work-based learning opportunities.

The related services help children with disabilities benefit from their special education by providing extra help and support in needed areas, such as speaking or moving. Related services include, but are not limited to, any of the following:
